Study in Australia

Two intakes a year, and a research scholarship that is decided by the university, not the government.

Scholarship route available Self-funded route available Temporary Graduate visa, 2–3 years after graduation

Australia runs two full intakes, February and July, which makes it one of the few destinations where missing a cycle costs six months rather than a year. Coursework master's admission is fast and fairly mechanical; research degrees are supervisor-led and funded mainly through the Research Training Program.

The RTP is the thing to understand. It is government money distributed to universities as a block grant, so each university runs its own rounds and picks its own scholars. There is no national application form.

What they require

  • Bachelor's with a credit or distinction average; research degrees usually want a thesis component or a master's by research
  • IELTS 6.5 with no band below 6.0 is the common baseline; 7.0 for some fields
  • A research proposal of roughly 1,500–3,000 words for HDR applications
  • Two academic referees
  • Genuine Student evidence for the visa: targeted questions about course choice and your plans

How admission actually works

Coursework admission is criteria-based and quick, often within two to four weeks. Higher degree by research admission starts with an expression of interest that goes to a school, which matches you with a supervisor before any formal application exists.

RTP rounds are fixed per university: broadly, applications around August–October for a February start and around March–April for a July start, with outcomes two to four months later.

How much does a supervisor matter?

Essential for research degrees.

An HDR application without an identified supervisor rarely proceeds. The proposal is the document that gets a supervisor interested, and it is read by both the supervisor and the scholarship committee, so it does double duty.

When applications open and close

The pattern below is what these systems normally do. Every programme sets its own dates, so treat this as the planning shape and confirm on the official portal linked at the end.

Funding that genuinely exists here

Research Training Program (RTP)

Fee offset plus a living stipend; 2026 stipends run from roughly AUD 34,000 to AUD 43,000 depending on the university. Applied for through the university's own round, not a national portal.

University research scholarships

Top-ups and university-branded awards, usually assessed in the same round as the RTP.

Australia Awards

Government development scholarships for selected countries, with their own national timetable.

Destination Australia

Support for study at regional campuses.

Documents this country asks for

  • Research proposal for HDR applications
  • Transcripts and degree certificates
  • Evidence of research output: thesis, publication, technical report
  • Two referee reports, often on the university's own form
  • Genuine Student statement answers and financial evidence for the visa

Visa and permit

The subclass 500 visa now assesses Genuine Student criteria through targeted questions rather than a free-form essay: why this course, how it fits your career, your ties and circumstances. Financial evidence of about AUD 29,710 a year plus tuition and travel is expected, and processing is prioritised by provider category, so a complete early application is worth more than a fast one.

After you graduate

Temporary Graduate visa, 2–3 years

The subclass 485 gives two years for a coursework master's and three for a research master's or doctorate, with extensions for regional study. Age and English conditions apply, and the rules have tightened repeatedly, so check before counting on it.

What they favour

  • A proposal with a real question, a method and a timeline
  • Alignment with a supervisor's current projects
  • Honest, specific answers in the Genuine Student section
  • Applicants who apply in the round rather than between rounds

Where applications fail

  • Submitting an HDR application with no supervisor contact
  • Missing the RTP round and applying for admission only
  • Thin Genuine Student answers that read as copied
  • Leaving the visa application until the last month before the intake
