Study in Italy

Low fees tied to family income, and regional grants that pay more than most scholarships.

Scholarship route available Self-funded route available Job-search permit, up to 12 months after graduation

Italy has two features that change the maths for international students. Tuition at public universities is scaled to declared family income through the ISEE system, so many international students pay a few hundred euros a year. And each region runs a DSU right-to-study grant that covers accommodation, meals and a cash allowance for students who qualify on income and merit.

Pre-enrolment for non-EU applicants runs through the Universitaly portal and is a required step before the visa, separate from the university application itself.

What they require

  • Bachelor's with at least 180 ECTS or the equivalent, assessed for curricular requirements
  • IELTS 6.0–6.5 for English-taught programmes; B2 Italian where taught in Italian
  • Declaration of Value (DoV) or a CIMEA statement of comparability for your degree
  • Motivation letter and CV
  • ISEE parificato if you want income-based fees and DSU grants

How admission actually works

Each university assesses curricular requirements course by course, and many run an online interview for English-taught master's. Decisions are usually published in rounds, with several call windows between January and June.

The DSU regional grant is a separate application to the regional body, with its own deadline in the summer, and it is where most of the money actually is.

How much does a supervisor matter?

Not needed for master's. Important for PhD.

Italian doctoral programmes are advertised as annual competitive calls with a fixed number of funded places and a public ranking. You apply to the call with a research project; contacting a potential supervisor beforehand helps you write a project the department can actually host.

When applications open and close

The pattern below is what these systems normally do. Every programme sets its own dates, so treat this as the planning shape and confirm on the official portal linked at the end.

Funding that genuinely exists here

DSU regional right-to-study grants

Accommodation, meals and a cash allowance based on income and merit, applied for through the regional body, usually closing in the summer.

University merit scholarships

Tuition waivers and fee bands set by the ISEE bracket.

Invest Your Talent in Italy

Government programme with scholarships in engineering, economics and design for selected countries.

PhD scholarships

Attached to the annual doctoral call, typically around €16,000 a year plus a research budget.

Documents this country asks for

  • Declaration of Value, CIMEA comparability statement or a diploma supplement
  • Legalised and translated transcripts and degree certificate
  • ISEE parificato for income-based fees and DSU grants
  • Motivation letter and CV
  • Universitaly pre-enrolment confirmation for the visa appointment

Visa and permit

Pre-enrolment on Universitaly is compulsory for non-EU applicants and feeds the consulate directly. After arrival you apply for the permesso di soggiorno within eight working days, which is a step many students miss.

After you graduate

Job-search permit, up to 12 months

Graduates may convert to a permit to await employment for up to twelve months, then to a work permit once employed.

What they favour

  • Curricular match, checked exam by exam
  • Applicants who complete the DoV or CIMEA step early
  • Clear plans for learning Italian for longer programmes
  • Portfolio quality in design and architecture

Where applications fail

  • Leaving the Declaration of Value to the last month
  • Missing the DSU regional deadline, which is separate from admission
  • Assuming pre-enrolment is automatic after admission
  • Applying in the last round when places are nearly gone
