Sweden runs a single national admissions round through universityadmissions.se. You rank up to four programmes in one application, pay one fee of SEK 900, and the deadline in mid-January does not move. Late applications are not considered.
That rigidity is also a gift: the whole country runs on one calendar, so you can plan the year around a single date and know exactly when results arrive, usually at the end of March.

What they require
- Bachelor's degree with the specific prerequisite courses each programme lists
- IELTS 6.5 with no band below 5.5, or equivalent, as the standard "English 6" requirement
- Documents uploaded by the documentation deadline, usually about two weeks after the application deadline
- CV and motivation letter for most programmes
- Portfolio for design and architecture
How admission actually works
Centralised and rule-based. Eligibility is assessed against published prerequisites, then selection uses academic merit, motivation or a portfolio depending on the programme. Results come in one national announcement.
Scholarships from the Swedish Institute and from individual universities usually require the university application to be submitted first, so the January deadline gates the funding too.
How much does a supervisor matter?
Not used for master's. PhD is a paid job.
Swedish doctoral candidates are employees with a salary, pension and holiday. You apply to advertised positions, not to a department in the abstract; the vacancy lists the project and the supervisor.
When applications open and close
The pattern below is what these systems normally do. Every programme sets its own dates, so treat this as the planning shape and confirm on the official portal linked at the end.
Funding that genuinely exists here
Full tuition, living costs and insurance for candidates from listed countries, with a short window usually in February.
Lund, KTH, Chalmers, Uppsala and others run their own scholarship rounds, usually applied for in January–February after the national application.
Many joint programmes include Swedish partners.
Salaried doctoral positions, advertised on university sites and Euraxess.
Documents this country asks for
- Degree certificate and transcripts, uploaded to universityadmissions.se in the prescribed format
- Proof of English 6, or an exemption if your degree was taught in English
- CV, motivation letter and sometimes a summary of your thesis
- Passport copy as proof of citizenship for fee assessment
- Portfolio for creative disciplines
Visa and permit
After accepting an offer and paying the first tuition instalment, you apply for a residence permit with Migrationsverket, showing about SEK 10,000 a month for the study period. Processing can take months, so apply the day the offer is confirmed.
After you graduate
12 months to seek work
Graduates may apply for a residence permit to look for work or start a business, usually twelve months, provided they hold the qualification and can support themselves.
What they favour
- Exact prerequisite matching, listed course by course
- A motivation letter in plain, specific language
- Complete documents by the documentation deadline
- Applicants who rank all four choices thoughtfully rather than four versions of one dream
Where applications fail
- Missing 15 January, which ends the cycle
- Uploading documents after the documentation deadline
- Ranking four equally competitive programmes with no realistic fallback
- Assuming scholarship applications are automatic
